چکیده

The experimental data of the preceding investigations (I, 2) suggested tha t the failure of older animals, which readily succumb after intracerebral injection of the virus, to exhibit any clinical manifestations of central nervous system (CNS) involvement after peripheral inoculations was possibly due to the presence of certain barriers to the invasiveness of the virus, encountered at the site of inoculation when the intramuscular or intraocular routes were employed and within the CNS when the virus was given by way of the nose. The hypothesis of localized barriers developing with increasing age of the host depends to a great extent on evidence tha t the distribution or movement of this virus in the nervous system of mice occurs by different mechanisms after peripheral and intracerebral inoculations. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether a detailed study of the localization of lesions in the nervous systems of susceptible and resistant mice after different modes of inoculation could throw additional light on the movement of the virus and thus on the nature of the resistance of older animals.

Influence of Host Factors on Neuroinvasiveness of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus

Peripheral inoculation of vesicular stomatitis virus is constantly followed by myelitis or encephalitis in young mice, but not in young (or old) guinea pigs. The cause of this variation was elucidated by investigating the fate of the virus after inoculation by a number of different routes. Direct intracerebral injection of minimally infective amounts of virus was found to be equally fatal for y...

P 130: The Role of Host T- Cell Lymphocyte in Immunopathogenesis of HTLV-I-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is associated with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Only a limited percentage of infected individuals develop disease in response to the virus while the majority remain asymptomatic and HAM/TSP is the most common clinical manifestation of the virus. HAM/TSP is an inflamma...

Peripheral immunization blocks lethal actions of vesicular stomatitis virus within the brain.

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is the prototype virus for 75 or more negative-strand RNA viruses in the rhabdovirus family. Some of these viruses, including VSV, can cause neurological impairment or death upon brain infection. VSV has shown promise in the prevention and treatment of disease as a vaccine vector and an oncolytic virus, but infection of the brain remains a concern. Three VSV var...

The Role of Mammalian Target of Rapamycine Signaling Pathway in Central Nervous System Cancers: A Review

Mammalian mechanistic target of rapamycine (mTOR) is a conserved serine/threonine kinase in the cellular PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. This pathway is modified by cellular alterations such as level of energy, growth factors, stresses, as well as the increased environmental level of cancerous cytokines. In general, increase of this kinase protein function is seen in various types of cancers, ...

P167: Key Role of Inflammation in Central Nervous System Damage and Disease; TNFα, IL-1

Inflammation is portion of the body's immune response and it is basically a host protective response to tissue ischemia, injury, autoimmune responses or infectious agents. Although the information presented so far points to a detrimental role for inflammation in central nervous system (CNS) disease, it may also be useful. CNS demonstrates characteristic of inflammation, and in response to damag...
